Nugara

Nugara is a group of people that meet regularly to play djembé. At those meetings everybody is invited. Besides djembé we also play other instruments. We all live in and around Roden.

What does Nugara mean?

Nugara, in Arab notation, is West-Sudanese for "drumming". It is pronounced "noo-gara", with the "g" as in "galaxy".

To be precise, the word originates from the Bagara group within the Nuba tribe. There are language has only speech, there is no written language. In Sudan the words are then written down phonetically in Arabic.

The Nuba tribe originally came from Egypt - Tutanchamon was also Nuba, as is our fellow drummer Ali Bashir, who gave us our name.

Djembé

The music sounds well,
when everybody joins.
Joining, that's what matters!
Who joins, gets involved,
who joins will find his place.

Membership

Nugara is not a club where you have to become a member, it's just a collection of enthusiastic people. We began at the end of 1998 as a group that got lessons from Gerard Boersma, of Drumshop "Hit It!" in Nieuw Roden.

Contact person is Jacob Mulder.

You're invited to come along!
